The town of Borovichy is situated on the famous rapids river
Msta, that flows into the Ilmen lake. In the ancient times
Msta was used for trading routes conecting the land of Veliky
Novgorod with the Volga and the Caspian Sea.
Borovichy was first mentioned in chronicles in 1495, but
the settlement existed much earlier. After Peter I founded
Vishny Volochyok waterway system, Borovichy was rapidly growing.
Carpenters, barge haulers, shipping pilots lived here, barges
were built and repaired, the population grew.
In the second half of the XVIIIth century near Borovichy
the resources of lime, iron pyrites, fire clay, quartz sand,
brown coal were found. The Borovichy clays were the best in
Russia and produced fire clay not worse than the English analogues.
Since the 50s of the XIXth in the outskirts of the town the
factories producing fire clays appeared. Thus, in 1913 Borovichy
factories produced about 40 per cent of all fire clays in
Russia.
Today Borovichy is the second, after Veliky Novgorod, industrial
centre of the region. Its main production is fire clay, it
is exported in many countries of the world.
The first arched bridge in Russia, built in 1905 after the
project of engineer Belelyubsky, is an outstanding monument
of Russian technique. It connects the banks of Msta with a
beautiful, delicate, light arch. The trick of the original
construction is in the use of the bending bow principle.
In 35 km from Borovichy there is a settlement called Konchanskoye-Suvorovskoye.
In 1763 Russian commander Suvorov's father bought an estate
here, which was inherited by the son. In 1942 in the house
was opened a museum.
In 20 km south from Borovichy on the bank of the Msta river
there is a settlement called Opechensky Posad, a historical
and architectural monument. You can find there the typical
structure of the settlement, the unique stone quay with cast-iron
berthings. Here, on the bank of the Msta river S.Ushanov,
the inhabitant, founded the unique natural collection of trees
and bushes, their number is above 150, and most of them are
exotic.
The activity of many famous Russian figures is related to
the land of Borovichy - commander Suvorov, scientist, poet,
musician and architect Lvov, composer Lyadov, painter Rerikh,
writer and scientist Bianky and others.
