Music
Culture Center
named after Rakhmaninov
7, Bolshaya Moskovskaya,
Veliky Novgorod, 173000
The Music and Culture Center, in 2003 reorganized and
based on the Municipal Culture Center "International
Children's Festival named after S. Rakhmaninov" (1993),
aims to promote Rakhmaninov's musical heritage.
After the International Music Festival and the International
Young Pianists Contest named after S. Rakhmaninov have
been organized, Veliky Novgorod has been known all over
Russia as Rakhmaninov's native land. There were 5 International
Festivals and 4 International Contests here. The Russian
National Orchestra, the Moscow Theatre "New Opera",
the Opera and Ballet Theatre of St.-Petersburg Music
Conservatory, peoples' artists of Russia and the USSR,
eminent Russian and foreign musicians have participated
in festivals. According to journalists and authoritative
musicians, such as M. Pletnev, S. Stadler, S. Bellz,
deceased E. Kolobov, the Novgorod Rakhmaninov Festival
has become an important event in the cultural life of
Russia. In 1998 and 2000 the Center was awarded grants
of the Russian Federation's President.
The next festival takes place in Veliky Novgorod on
April, 26 - May, 8 (2006). The budget of the contest
and the festival is supposed to amount to 1 500 000
rubles.
The International Young Pianists Contest is for pupils
of ordinary non-professional children's music schools.
A prominent musician Michael Pletnev has composed a
piece "Little variations about Rakhmaninov", usually
performed by senior students on the third round.
Year after year more and more cities become interested
in the contest. Thus, in 2003 young pianists from 14
Russian cities, including distant regions of Siberia
and the Far East, as well as ones from Ireland, Canada,
the Ukraine and Japan participated in it.
Since 1993 every autumn and spring the Rakhmaninov's
Memorial Days are held, including a great program of
concerts, exhibitions and master-classes.
Leading Russian and local Mass Medias, such as "Radio
of Russia", "Mayak" ("Beacon"), a television channel
"Culture", newspapers "Culture" and "Music Survey",
a radio-station "Orpheus" give coverage to all the contests
and festivals.
The project on building the monument to the musician
on his home land is devoted to perpetuating the memory
of S. Rakhmaninov. The monument should be a good addition
to the image of the city as the home-city of the great
composer.
There are an exposition "Rakhmaninov to Russia" and
a photo-one, named "I've had a native land" (Rakhmaninov's
favorite places on Novgorod Land) in the Musical Culture
Center. The main idea of the exposition "Rakhmaninov
to Russia" is to show us a new unknown before Rakhmaninov's
scope of activity - his charity - as the money, paid
for his great work as a performer, the musician has
spent, helping his compatriots. It is the first exposition
of such a kind in Russia and the whole world. Excursions
and lectures for the audience of all ages are based
on this exposition. The exposition is on the regular
basis. Excursions can be ordered.
|

|
|
The photo- exposition "I've had a native land" presents
pictures of memorable places, related to S. Rakhmaninov
and his family.
There are a chamber concert hall and exhibition halls
that are adopted for both organizing a permanent exposition
and holding seminars, devoted to the work of the great
musician.
